Oprah’s interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Marke was anticipated many weeks before it aired, and the couple shared their views on the Royal Family and a side of the story we’ve never heard before.
For most of the interview, Dutchess Meghan was the one who spoke, and Prince Harry chimed in to express his opinion and to share his side of things.
The “CBS Presents Oprah with Meghan and Harry” aired in the United States on Sunday, March 7th, between 8 PM and 10 PM ET. In the United Kingdom, it will air on Monday, March 8th, on the ITV hub. It is expected to start at 9 PM, GMT. The meeting was previously recorded, and in the past few weeks, we were able to see teaser videos that showed us what we could expect from it.
The couple decided that now is the right time to speak out on the controversy surrounding their relationship with the Royal Family. This meeting has been years in the making, and the initial interview was scheduled for March 2018. On why it was postponed, Marle shared:
“I remember that conversation very well; I wasn’t even allowed to have that conversation with you personally, right.” By this, the Dutches inclined that a Buckingham Palace communications staff was always present in her interviews and meetings.

“I couldn’t have said yes to you then, that wasn’t my choice to make. So, as an adult who lived a really independent life — to then go into this construct that is… different than I think what people imagine it to be — it’s really liberating to be able to have the right and the privilege in some ways to be able to say yes. I mean… I’m ready to talk.”
Archie’s skin color
One of the first things discussed in the meeting between Ophra and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle was the allegations on their son’s skin colour. Meghan stated: “In those months when I was pregnant, and at the same time there was talk about no title, no security, and also conversations about how dark his skin might be when born.”
Both Markle and Prince Harry refused to reveal which of the Royal Family members started this discussion. One thing that was revealed was that neither the Queen nor Prince Phillip was involved in the discussion.
Prince Harry stated that he was hurt that his family never talked about the “colonial undertones” mentioned in articles and news. He added: “That conversation, I am never going to share. At the time, it was awkward; I was a bit shocked.”
Markle shared that the decision to forgo a title for baby Archie was not hers or Harry’s decision and that the rules prevented it, at least until Prince Charles ascended the throne. She revealed they were told that the baby will not get royal security if he does not have a title and that there were officials who raised concerns about the colour of Archie’s skin.
The wedding before the Royal Wedding
Another revelation discussed in the interview was that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle got secretly wed before the official Royal Wedding. It happened three days before the official big day by the Archbishop of Canterbury.
The secret wedding took place in their backyard. Meghan revealed: “We just said, ‘Look, this thing, this spectacle is for the world, but we want our union between us. So, like, the vows that we have framed in our room are just the two of us in our backyard with the Archbishop of Canterbury.”
Meghan revealed, the Dutchess Kate made her cry
There were many articles shared worldwide about this incident, and when we first learned about it, the headlines were that Meghan Markle made Dutchess Kate cry. The story broke out just before Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding, and it was a trending topic for more than six months after the wedding.
Meghan didn’t reveal too much detail about the incident, and she stated that Kate is a good person and she would like to protect her privacy. She added that the Dutchess apologized later on and that there are no hard feelings between them. The disagreement between them happened a few days before the wedding when they didn’t see eye to eye on the flower girl dresses.
“She made me cry; it hurt my feelings. But it was a tough week before the wedding. She was upset and apologized and brought flowers and wrote a note. I’ve forgiven her. What’s hard to get over is that I was being blamed for something I didn’t do but happened to me.”
Markle shared that everyone in the Palace knew the truth and that Meghan never made Kate cry like it was portrayed in the newspapers. However, no one chose to stand on Markle’s side, and there were no official statements on the event.
Meghan’s suicidal thoughts
One of the hardest topics in this interview was Markle’s mental health and how the Royal life made her feel. She stated that after months of bullying from the press and being banned from leaving the house, she started experiencing suicidal thoughts.
“I just didn’t want to be alive anymore,” Meghan shared. “And that was a very clear and real and frightening constant thought. And I remember — I remember how he just cradled me.” She, later on, revealed that she tried to ask for support and help from the Royal family, but her request was declined.
“I went to the institution and I said that I needed to go somewhere to get help, said I had never felt that way before and need to go somewhere, and I was told that I couldn’t, that it wouldn’t be good for the institution.”
“Nothing was ever done,” She added.
A photograph that showed her mental health state
Meghan stated that she told Harry about her suicidal thoughts, and on the same night, they had to attend an official event at the Royal Albert Hall. She shared her thoughts on a seemingly normal photo that still haunts her to this day.
“That picture, if you zoom in, what I see is how tightly his knuckles are gripped around mine. We are smiling and doing our job, but we’re both just trying to hold on. Every time those lights went down in that royal box, I was weeping.”
Prince Harry’s relationship with his father
During the interview, Oprah asked Prince Harry about his relationship with his family, especially on how he gets along with his father, Prince Charles, and his brother, Prince William.
After the couple stepped back from royals, Prince Harry revealed that his father stopped taking his calls. He added:
“I feel really let down because he’s been through something similar, he knows what pain feels like, and Archie’s his grandson. But at the same time, of course, I will always love him, but there’s a lot of hurts that’s happened, and I will continue to make it one of my priorities to try and heal that relationship.”
He revealed that he loves his brother, that they support each other through everything, and that they’ve been through hell together. Prince Harry finished talking about this brother by saying:
“But we were on different paths.”
Since the couple stepped down as royals, Prince Harry revealed that they were cut off financially and that their Netflix and Spotify deals were never part of the plan, but he will do everything that needs to be done to provide for his family.
“But I’ve got what my mum left me, and without that, we wouldn’t have been able to do this.”
The couple’s relationship with the Queen
Another topic during the interview was the relationship the couple has with the Queen. Lately, many rumours have been on this subject, and Meghan and Prince Harry stated that their relationship is perfect.
The Duke of Sussex said that he has spoken to his grandmother many times during the past year and even had video calls with Archie. He added: “She’s my colonel-in-chief. She always will be.”
Markle had nothing but positive things to say about the Queen and stated that she presented her with some beautiful jewellery and that she gave her a blanket to keep her warm while travelling.
New baby’s gender
The couple already confirmed that they are expecting a new addition to the family. During Ophra’s interview, they revealed the gender of the baby – it’s a girl. Harry stated that he is more than happy but that they would be done with new additions after baby number two arrives.
At the end of the interview, Oprah asked Meghan if she’s got her happy ending with the Duke of Sussex. To that Markle answered: “Greater than any fairytale that you’ve ever read.”
